off about 9 A.M. I remained behind to
look after patients, 65 following in
rear with 10 ambulances at 4 P.M.
for camp at Pagny sur Meuse where
we found good barracks at old French
hospital.  expected to be here some time
but comparative comfort was not to
be ours for long, some rain but not
such a muddy place.  Prison Camp
at this place holding 1500 Huns.
22" Col. Hanner, D.S. sent to Corps as
consulting surg. Maj. Derby taking
charge as D.S.
Evacuating from here to B.H. 45
Weather better on 23" & rumor that
Div. is to go in Verdun sector, orders
came on 24" leaving by train on 26"
so hiked to Sorcey where entrained.
leaving 11 P.M. arriving Chalons
detrained hiked to Omey about 20 K.
reaching that place late in P.M.
Patients in quantities, 210 first 12 hrs.
Billetted in town & had good mess.
working here till 30" when moved
by truck thru Chalons to Suippes.
Where set up in side of large French
hospt. destroyed by Huns. arriving
in [?] in night. tried to sleep in [Ford?]
but too cold so had to keep moving
Set up tents next to road early
in A.M. & function as hosp. for
sick - Gas & Venereal. 216 patients
first 24 hrs. tho no bad gas cases.
Big air raid on Chalons, night of
Oct. 1" and as we were only 3 miles from
Chalons, could here it all.  sky swept
with search lights, Hun planes every-
where overhead. no shells dropped
near us.  Three shells burst just
overhead as we were preparing for
lunch next day & that night con-
continued shelling of troops about 2 K-
below us caused many casualties
Wounded began to come in very
[lively?]. moved down road to [?]
as Evac. Hospt. but about time had
tents up were relieved by Evac. 3
when we moved back to Suippes.
