    Camp of 2d Mass Regts

            near Stafford Court House

           May 29th 1863.

Dear E,

     I received yours of the 25th last

evening and as I happen to have a little

leasure this forenoon, I thought I would [improve?]

the chance to write. You ask if there is any

danger (or prospect I supposed you meen) of

our going into another fight soon. Of course

we cant tell, but the prospect is that we shall

be idle some time unless Lee should be foolis[h]

enough (which I pray to Heaven he may) cross

the river and atack us on this side, which if

he dose, will be the death blow for him, our army

never was in better spirits and is not so weak

in numbers or morail as the folks at home

think for, And let me say one thing to you

that whoever thinks, says, or pretends to hope

that the South will ever gain their independence

are eathere fools, copperheads, or villians, and
