    Camp 2d Mass Vol Infty.

Before Atlanta Georgia July 26h. 1864

Dear E.

I received a letter from you the other

day dated at Gloucester, and am glad you had a

good time, We crossed the Chattahoochee a week ago

Sunday or yesrerday, and are now 2 miles from the

center of the City. our Batteries putting thier shell and

solid shot into it whenever they please.

We had quite a smart fight Wednesday our corps loosing

about 1200 killed wounded and mising. Our regiment

lost but 3 wounded 2 privates and one commisioned

officer Capt. Sawyer of Co. "A." One of the privates Albert

Tonny belongs to our Company and was wounded at

Kingston while we were with the Wagons, And had

just got back from the Hospital.. he was hit this

time in the side breaking one rib, but his wound

is not considered dangerous. The Johnies are well

fortified about Atlanta and there is sum prospect

of there making a stand, but there is no telling

what they will do, they have left as good positions

if not better a number of times during the campaign

and they may leave this at any time. Our Batteries

can knock the City to pieces in six hours. [If] Sherman

wishes too but he will probaly make some move that

will cause them to leave of thier own accord
