since I came here besides a number of   influential laymen

in the region. This has been accomplished within

six months without  any public discussion. And while

I have been cloistered in my study very rarely leaving

the Institution except on the Sabbath even for an hour

This then is in brief the state of things here. Ought I to leave.

We are on the Border of a slave state.  On the skirts of the

largest city of the West and the very hot bed of Colonizationism

This is the most important Institution in the valley.

Within a year there will be probably 100 theological

students here. A strong abolition center in this Institution

and the region about it will influence the slave states, the

entire valley more than a hundred societies in the state

of New York. All our abolutsm brethren here are

decided that I ought to stay here.  [Beecher stowe...?]

[?] are a dead set against our cause and the students

believe it would be impossible to [entertain?] it with efficiency

if I should leave. God in his Providence has given me

some influence in this seminary and in the West. By

staying here for the present I am persuaded I can give

the glorious cause to which [?] are pledged more

influential aid than by any other course. I have a

large Bible class of colored adults in the city

which I attend Sabbath morning. Three ordained ministers

belong to it. Expect soon to start another for the afternoon

Shall spend my sabbaths almost exclusively in efforts to

educate and save  our poor dear colored brethren. The Lord

is [giving out ?] a strong hold upon them here.
