April 19th 1864.
After a lapse of time sufficient to place my veracity
almost in question, I have succeeded in obtaining the
long promised verses, but I do not feel quite certain
that the result will satisfy Miss Betty for the long wai-
-ting which even some time since prompted a doubt as to
my intention of procuring them.
The verses, according to my unpoetic views and judge-
-ment lack not only rhythm and euphony, but also
sentiment to such an extent as to induce the belief
that they are either a parody or burlesque on the
original. However, the guilt lies with some other
copyist, for I herewith transmit a copy, "ver-batim
et-literatino" of the only verses I have been able to
obtain. I find however, that they may be rather
better adapted to the Music than some I saw tried
on a former occasion, and I doubt not that to my
ear their transformation will seem complete when I
have the pleasure of hearing them executed at
Ingleside, and in which hope I sincerely trust I may
not be long kept waiting.
Very truly Your friend
Jno. S. Capers.
