                    Camden Nov 12th 1865

 

              Your kind letter of

condolence, my dearest friend, has

been received, & tho' the familiar

handwriting brought tears to my

eyes I was gladdened by the

assurance of your heart-felt sympathy

Oh! Miss Bettie how can I bear this

weight of woe! could I pillow my

aching head on your shoulder, my

own, sweet friend, I could tell you

verbally how I feel so much better

than I can by slipping all I wish

to say from the end of my pen:

Life has been bereft of every hope,

of all that made it bright &

happy & a cheerless pilgrim will

I now be through its mazy

walks: my brother! my own
