I will not attempt, Miss Bettie

to render a satisfactory excuse

for neglecting your letter so

long, & neither will I [consume?]

my first page with it but merely

say business & carelessness have

been the chief cause.  Another

Christmas has come & gone, & one

that [impressed?] itself on all of

the Southern people.  A very deep

snow fell on the morg of the

25th & continued to fall all

day & then came a freeze

which caused it to remain on

the ground for several days.

We were spending a very

pleasant xmas with Annies

family in Camden, & on

I do not know when they will be married.

Well I dont wish to tire you so must say

good night.  Please write soon & tell

me all the news about yr self, the

family, & the neighborhood.  A very kind

remembrance to each member of the
