Dear Richard,

                RICHMOND is Taken!

Taken at last almost beyond a doubt! so Father

Abraham says. Gen [Scodlger?] I think his

name is walked in this morning at 8 1/4 oclock

to days paper says Grant has been fighting for

three days and has taken twelve thousand

prisoners and fifty peices of artillery. I am so

rejoiced I can scarcely write I think now

this "cruel war" will "soon be over". Dear

Richard your last letter nearly frightened me to

death; I had been worrying about

you ever since your last letter for fear you would

get down sick. on taking this in my hand I

noticed that word at the bottom of the left hand

side, and thought it was sick at the same time

however I know it was your handwriting, I

tore it open quick enough you may be sure

but would find inside no symptoms of illness

of either body or mind; [on?] looking at the
