Dear Sir

Your letter of the

20th Inst, did not reach me until

a day or two ago, & I hasten

to reply.  You were reported ab-

sent without leave, as was every

other officer who had not sent

surgeons certificates, by order

of the Brig. Gen. [comg?], & were in

consequence thereof dropped from

the rolls of the army, by the war

Department, the notice of which

was sent to you some weeks

ago.  I was much surprised &

disturbed I confess to find this

action had been taken in your

case, as I had approved & fore-

warded your resignation before

it was done, indeed in the re-

port, I stated that you had of-

fered your resignation, & [further?]
