it is a mystery to this day why

you were dropped.  You say you

sent Surgeons certificates of dis-

ability to me, they never came

to hand but if you can show

to the Department, that you did

send them you can demand

as a matter of justice, that the

order be revoked, & that you be

restored to your command, I would

advise you at once to make a

petition to the war department, sta-

ting the facts & exhibiting the cer-

tificates of the surgeon as to your

unfitness for duty, get some friend

to attend to it for you, & I am sure

there will be no difficuly about

it.   I have always esteemed you

highly both as an officer & a gen-

tleman & should be much pleased

to see you set right.  With the
