are now (noon) tied up at the dock at Fort

Mason (see ink dot on north side of San Francisco).

Had a most wonderful dinner to-night --

salted almonds, celery, vegetable soup, roast

turkey, dressing, gravy, candied sweet potatoes, corn

on cob, crab salad, jello, cakes & coffee. Most

of the passengers have left the ship to live ahsore

and most of the ship's officers have their wives

and children on board for the trip up to

Mare Island to-morrow.

Bill is ever so much better this morning

and the Dr has taken him off of the sick list

so right after breakfast we took a taxi ($1.25)

to the Stewart Hotel and found a letter from

Ferd. This A.M. at about 4:00 we had 3 shocks

of an earthquake. The ship's officers were awakened

by the ships motion -- one said he thought

a tug boat had struck us and some thought we

had been torn from our moorings. Neither

Bill nor I were awakened by it at all. While

up in town we wandered about some of the

stores and in the Knox shop a clerk told

us that the taller buildings simply rocked

and that the Hotel Lincoln had settled on

one side leaving a space of about 2 feet between

its top and the adjoining building. The shops

were nice but no better than any other

place. We bought a large yellow Chrys-

anthemum (with ferns etc) for 25¢ and some

candy and returned to the ship. We sailed

for Vallejo (Mare Island Navy Yard) at 11 A.M.

The trip was very foggy and could not

see very much of the surrounding country. At

1:30 P.M. we were tied up to a dock at the

Navy Yard.

Early to-day we found out that we could

not remain on the Chaumont while she was in

the Navy Yard so Bill and I went right over to

Vallejo to look for an apartment. In the 3rd

place we looked -- The Virginia Courts Apts --

we found an apt having a good sized kitchen,

living room, bath and "bed-room-ette" for

$30 a month, all furnished even to silver

and linen and janitor service. We pay for

gas and light and laundry. After having
